Then call it "sulfur," not "fart gas." Repeated use of "fart gas" sounds juvenile.

besides, when I think of fart gas I think of methane.

<< <i>Yes, I do remember reading many threads here on AT over the years, including methods used to produce AT under different circumstances. I do not feel that these methods should be closely guarded secrets because knowing how something is produced is sometimes quite helpful in being able to recognize it. >>

Unfortunately, the vast majority of the people who put their trust in PCGS-slabbed coins do not read this forum, nor do most of them really want to take the time to learn -- most would rather just trust PCGS, I think.

I mean, if you think about it, if we ALL were determined to learn how to identify doctored coins, there would be less fear in buying them raw.

I have a file in which you graphically described your "techniques." You are admitting it now ONLY because you realize you have been cornered with no way out, otherwise you'd still be at it. You have done this "Hobby" and many people that trusted you a grave injustice. You have forever made it difficult for all of us to submit true NT coins to ever be graded and or certified PCGS 67 or for that fact, graded at all. I don't believe you realize yet just what damage you have caused or the extent of your actions.

I feel badly for you because you have done yourself, your reputation, irreparable damage. You played many people for fools just to boost your Ego and your pocketbook.

Shall I come out with the recipes you gave me or will you go out with a sembalnce of dignity and admit the Truth?

I am telling you, right here and now, that I KNOW you AT'd some of the coins in your Registry set. Don't make me do this.

Be a man and stop playing us for fools. You ask Pharmer if he thinks the Quarters in your set are NT. Ask me and not come clean and I will have no alternative but to tell it like it is. YES, Quarters in your Registry set have been AT'd.

Now come clean, tell it straight and go out with at least some "Class" and a shred of Dignity. Just remember this. I DO NOT hate you. YOU did this to yourself and have hurt many people in the process, in the past and in days and years to come.

This is complete bull sh!t. I have told boom how to clean coins in the past and that is it. BOOM LET ME SEE THE PROOF. When you first joined the site you kept asking me how I got 67"s suggesting that I artificially toned them I denied it then and I deny it now.
I did expain cleaning metods only. I may have mentioned envelopes or window sills but that is common knowledege.

I now wish I had pictures of my worst coin purchase. I bought an NGC* Morgan (MS64 I think) from eBay that had these colors. It must have been toned in a similar fashion, though likely before being submitted. I was hoping the colors would be a little different in-hand than pictured, but they were not. I overpaid like a idiot, then compounded it by not immediately returning the coin. I looked at that damn coin for two or three weeks before ditching it.

But it did teach me that if I don't fall in love with a coin the second I lay eyes on it, I'm never going to love it.

ManofCoins - I don’t know you, have never bought any coins from you and have never even exchanged PMs with you. Some free advice:

    1. Spend some time or at least a few days, before you make up your mind to sell your collection and start a new hobby.

    2. Your reputation is tarnished because of this, but with time and work, you can start to rehabilitate it. (If you leave the hobby, there will be no rehabilitation.)

    3. You have offered to buy back all toned coins that you sold; this is a good first step, restitution to the victims.

    4. Your set of quarters in the registry, send them in “no strings attached” to PCGS for the Presidential Review. I know this will cost, but it will add creditability back to your set.

    5. Voluntary to work with a youth group of the ANA or some other coin related group.

When I first started my career, over twenty-five years ago, I remember being taken into the Judges chamber for the fist time to meet him. During my discussion with the Judge, he told me something that stuck with me my whole career, “You are to Judge with candor, admonish with friendship, and reprehend with justice.” I have since learned where that quote came from, but it is still true today.

I will not forget what you have done, but I will except your apology.

MOC....irregardless of the "feel good" posts that ask you to stay in the hobby, I think that it would be best that you leave.

As you can see by the detectives that are here, and this being a national (and some international) forum, I seriously doubt that you can live this down. I can't imagine you being able to attend any shows and holding any credibility with anyone that you buy from or sell to. Any coin that can be traced back to you will be tainted. Any coin that you try to sell on e-bay will be discussed here.

IMHO... I don't see numismatics as holding a viable future for you. Time to move on, brother.

Well....here's my two rainbow-toned cents worth:

I've been around quite a while as a coin collector (over 50yr). It amazes me that this kind of alteration could be accomplished while the coin was inside the slab, without leaving visible evidence on the slab. But, the evidence seems convincing. Technology, I guess. Personally, I have always been skeptical of "multi-colored toning" on modern coins, and I don't care for toning on any coin. IMHO, all toned coins are constantly changing appearance. Some that are attractive today, and command a huge premium in price, may be very unattractive with time.
While I can't prove it, I have no doubt whatsoever that others are "doctoring" coins in the slab. They just haven't been caught yet. Some probably never will. The almighty dollar is a powerful force.
Regarding this particular case, I have never met, nor knowingly dealt with Man-O-Coins. I feel sorry for him at this point. But, he has lost my respect as a numismatist. The damage has been done. He has emotionally and financially hurt many, many folks in the numismatic field, and there's nothing he can possibly do now to "make it right".
I do suggest that he provide the slab companies with the information on how he was able to do the dirty deed. Maybe they can come up with a "fix".
